NOTE; These contests require a little more time and effort than the other ones, but they are fun anyhow. FAT - THE FATAL FRONTIER This contests begins the first week in May and ends the last week in August. It is to help members lose weight over the summer. The winner is the member who gets their rocket ship furthest out of the solar system. We made a poster with the sun on it, and about 12 planets. (Yes, we know there really aren't that many in our solar system!) Each member is given her own starship to command.. She gets to design and name the starship herself. To begin with, all starships are put in parking orbit around the sun. If you lose weight, then you get to move your starship ahead one planet. If you stay the same or are not present, your starship stays in place. If you gain, then your starship goes back one planet.. The TOPS members who is furthest ahead at the end of the contest gets a small prize. KOPS may advance a planet a week by being present and within leeway. They go back a planet by being absent or out of leeway. The KOPS who is furthest ahead gets a small prize NOTE: We made things interesting by designating 3 of these planets "bonus" planets. POKER CONTEST Several decks of cards are shuffled and put on a table. Each week a member has a chance to come up and draw cards from the deck. They may earn one card each for coming to the meeting, showing a weight loss for the night (TOPS), being at or under goal (KOPS), bringing in a food sheet, and turning in a recipe or article about nutrition. The contest ends when all the cards are drawn. That night, everyone gets their cards together and makes the best poker hand that they can out of their cards. One with the best hand won a small prize. GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS This one takes a little time. We ordered some make your own Santa clause papers from Oriental Trading. This consisted of a Santa and different clothing items you can put on him. We made one Santa for every one of our members. Each week, if they came in with a loss, they would get to add one part to their Santa. At the end of the contest, the one whose Santa was most decorated won a prize. AFGHAN CONTEST You need someone in the chapter who knits or crochets for this one. Anyone wishing to participate brings in a skein of yarn in their favorite color. Each week, the best loser gives their skein of yarn to the sewer and a row of color is added to the afghan. After the afghan reaches about 60 inches, the member whose color appears the most wins. |
GONE FISHING Before the contest started, we went out and bought a bunch of little prizes. We then numbered each one. We then made a poster with boats floating upon a sea of fish. Every member had their own boat, complete with fishing pole. Below them were fish which had numbers on them. When a member came in with a loss, she got to choose a fish and we would attach it to her fishing pole. A kops could earn a fish by being at or under goal. The contest ended when all the fish were caught. We reeled the lines in and everyone got the gifts that were behind the fish. AFGHAN CONTESTS You need a volunteer who knits or crochets for this. Each member who wishes to enter purchases a skein of yarn in their favorite color. Each week the best loser gives her yarn to the knitter who adds a row of their color to the afghan.
